Duplicate MAC Addresses
Manufacturers re-use MAC Addresses and they ship cards with duplicate addresses to different parts of the United States or the world so that there is only a very small chance two computers with network cards with the same MAC Address will end up on the same network.
What does the second half of a MAC address represent?
The first half (24 BITS) of a MAC address contains the ID number of the adapter manufacturer. The second half (24 MORE BITS) of a MAC address represents the serial number assigned to the adapter by the manufacturer.
Do MAC addresses repeat?
Nothing stops the same MAC address from being present on different networks at the same time. Nothing stops the same MAC address from being present on different computers in the same network at different times.
Can a MAC address have 2 IP addresses?
Yes, it is quite possible for a machine with one MAC address to have two IP addresses on the same (LAN) segment.
How do I prevent duplicate MAC address?
To prevent the same MAC address from being allocated to different devices, one Logical Domains Manager checks with other Logical Domains Managers on other systems by sending a multicast message over the control domain’s default network interface, including the address that the Logical Domain Manager wants to assign to
Why do we need both IP and MAC address?
So again, IP Addresses are logical and routeable addresses. And that’s why computers have both MAC Addresses and IP Addresses. MAC Addresses handle the physical connection from computer to computer while IP Addresses handle the logical routeable connection from both computer to computer AND network to network.
Why do most laptops have 3 MAC addresses?
A computer has a unique MAC address for each network interface. For a laptop that means a different MAC for WiFi than Ethernet. The same also for a desktop computer that includes WiFi. If a computer has multiple Ethernet ports or a USB adapter for WiFi or Ethernet it would have more MAC addresses for each of them.
How many MAC addresses are left?
This 48-bit address space contains potentially 248 (over 281 trillion) possible MAC addresses. The IEEE manages allocation of MAC addresses, originally known as MAC-48 and which it now refers to as EUI-48 identifiers.
What security issues could be caused by duplicate MAC addresses?
Duplicate MAC addresses will not trigger any sort of security problem in an unmanaged switch (a switch without configuration software), or a managed switch (like most Cisco/HP/Junipers) that has not been configured for port security.
How do I find a duplicate MAC address?
Here is how you can check it:
On an unaffected host on the same network, open up a command prompt. On a Windows machine, type “arp -a [suspected duplicate IP]” and hit enter. The output of the response should contain a MAC address. Compare this address to the affected machine.
Can a machine have 2 MAC address?
No. A MAC is contains a vendor id, model number and serial number so it is unique. Usually the MAC is the Ethernet Adapter so if a machine has multiple adapters it will have multiples MAC.
What happens if two hosts have the same MAC layer address or same IP address in a LAN?
Both hosts will receive some packets. Neither will function correctly because neither can receive enough packets to create and maintain a TCP connection. They will definitely not exchange any packets with each other.
What happens if two devices have the same MAC address?
No two devices on a local network should ever have the same MAC address. If that does happen, both devices will have communications problems because the local network will get confused about which device should receive the packet.
What happens if two hosts share the same IP address but not the same MAC address on a LAN?
When two MAC addresses have the same IP address, you will end up sending data to the wrong device as on local LAN segment, data is being send based on MAC destination and source address.
How do I remove duplicate MAC address in SCCM?
Using SCCM 1610 or Later
In the Client Approval and Conflicting Records tab.In the Duplicate hardware identifiers section, click Add and enter your MAC Address or SMBIOS GUID to exclude.
Does cloning a VM change the MAC address?
When cloning a Linux virtual machine, a new MAC address is assigned to the virtual machine, but the configuration files are not necessarily updated.
How many MAC addresses can a switch hold?
The maximum number of MAC addresses that it can learn is 8,192 MAC addresses. Again, depending on whatever hardware you’re using, that number could go up, could go down, but that’s hardware
